KARA Families Are Healthy Families
KARA Family Resource Centre is a not-for-profit organization guided by a Board of Directors. KARA was formed in November 1984 by a collaborative of 16 community agencies and/or individuals who identified a need for services to low income, single mothers.
Our original program, and now our flag ship program, is Caring Families. This program provides parents the opportunity to learn and interact with their children (0-6 years of age). The program has changed over the years to accommodate the needs of the families who come to this program. In addition to Caring Families, KARA offers other courses and workshops. Some programs are for parents only and others are interactive programs for parents and their preschoolers.
KARA Family Resource Centre was designated as the Northeast Edmonton Parent Link Centre in January 2006. Parent Link Centres are an initiative of Alberta Children's Services and are designed to provide programming and services to parents of children 0-6 years of age. Although KARA has a focus on parents of children 0-6, we also provide programs and services to parents with children of all ages. Currently there are 46 Parent Link Centres in Alberta that provide services to over 160 communities. See the KARA NE Edmonton Parent Link Centre brochure . For over 30 years, KARA Family Resource Centre has been providing programs and services to parents in Edmonton.
The funding for our programs comes from the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region (our first core funder), City of Edmonton Family and Community Services, ECALA (Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association), Alberta Children and Youth Services, gaming proceeds, various grants and from the generous donations of community members. This funding allows us to continue to offer programs and services to families in Edmonton at no cost. Although we provide services to all who ask, many of our families are those who struggle financially, they may be socially isolated or have other barriers that prevent them from attending programs such as ours. By offering courses at no cost, bus tickets, and food we try to reduce the barriers for these families.
KARA is an acronym for: Kids Are the Responsibility of All.
To promote the healthy development of children by empowering families.
To provide a safe environment, and programming that enhances self-esteem and independence through education, role modeling, and hands-on learning opportunities.
